"Wherefore, the people were desirous to retain in remembrance his name. And whoso should reign in his stead were called by the people, second Nephi, third Nephi, and so forth, according to the reigns of the kings; and thus they were called by the people, let them be of whatever name they would." (Jacob 1:11)

"And it came to pass that as Ammon and Lamoni were journeying thither, they met the father of Lamoni, who was king over all the land." (Alma 20:8)

"And he did erect him an exceedingly beautiful throne;" (Ether 10:6)

The Mayans and surrounding tribes had a complex political structure with kings who ruled over localities and who were subject to kings who ruled over regions. They sat on thrones, carved from stone, and wore costly apparel with elaborate headwear that served as crowns.

They also had the custom of renaming a ruler to the name of the first king in a line.
