Charity is the pure love of God.

I think it is wonderful when people volunteer to serve the needs of the community. One can find such Christian love in many churches. I was part of the Hurricane Katrina clean up. Thousands of men took off work to descend upon the city of New Orleans, bringing with them their own supplies and tools, to offer assistance to the many homeowners whose houses were turned into toxic swamps. It was dirty and smelling work, but it needed to be done. These men came from surrounding states. I lived in Texas. https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/ldsnewsro... It reminds me of how the church responded to the starving saints in Europe after World War II. Elder Benson supervised the distribution of 127 railroad carloads of food, clothing, bedding, and medicine throughout Europe. The church responded with overwhelming generosity. And the very definition of Christian love can be found in Brigham Youngs plea in General Conference, to send relief to help the Willie Martin handcart companies, and bring them safely to the Salt Lake Valley. The first of over 200 rescue wagons left two days later. Oxen teams were used to clear the way, when the snow came. And the first rescuers found the handcart companies on the very day that the first winter storm arrived - October 19th. The rescuers had traveled over 350 miles. It was also the day that Handcart companies' rations had run out. Rescue efforts continued well into December. https://history.churchofjesuschrist.org/content/hi...

The LDS church is far from stingy. Of all the countries in the world, the United States is the most charitable, and Utah is the most charitable of all the states.
