Written By His Own Hand

The original preface to the Book of Abraham, the one edited by Joseph Smith himself, is slightly
different than the preface found in today’s Pearl of Great Price, and acknowledges that it was the
author who purported it to be an autograph, not Joseph Smith. Nowhere does Joseph Smith claim
the Book of Abraham to be actual autograph.

"A Translation of Some ancient Records that have fallen into our hands, from the Catecombs[sic]
of Egypt, purporting to be the writings of Abraham, while he was in Egypt, called the Book of
Abraham, written by his own hand upon papyrus."
